Move Files From PC To Mac

It’s very similar to the process between of transferring files between two Windows PCs. You could copy your files to a large flash drive and then plug that flash drive into the USB port on your Mac. An icon will appear on the desktop and you can then open and choose the files you want to transfer.

You could also use an external hard drive, but it must be one that is Mac-compatible. The flash drive transfer will only work if your Mac has a USB port. Some only feature the USB C port.
You could also consider using a cloud storage account like OneDrive or DropBox to transfer your data.
But your best bet may be to use the Windows Migration Assistant for your new Mac. You’ll need to know the administrator password on your PC before you begin.
Your Mac and Your PC both need to be on your home network or hooked together with an Ethernet cable.
Click here to download the Windows Migration Assistant to your PC.
Then open the program and choose “Continue.”

On your Mac, open Migration Assistant from your utilities folder. Choose the option to transfer From a Windows PC.

You’ll need to enter your Windows username and password and then click Continue. Choose your PC from the list of available computers and then wait until your PC displays a passcode.

Once both computers display the same pass code, click Continue.
The Mac will then scan the drive and you can select which items you want to transfer.
You can transfer e-mail contacts, calendar information, Internet Explorer bookmarks, iTunes content, pictures, system settings like language and location, music, and documents.
Migration Assistant will let you know when the transfer is done. Make sure to check your new Mac to make sure all the files you need have transferred before getting rid of your old PC.

Best way to solve error: " you don’t have administrator permissions" in windows 7

If you are the owner and only user of your computer, it sounds like there may be an issue with your security settings. Let’s start by going to Computer in your Start Menu.
Choose the local disk where you have your operating system and right-click
Choose Properties
Then select the Security tab and Advanced options.
Now choose the Change permissions button under Permission entries.
A window will open with the list of user accounts on your computer. Click on the account you wish to give full permission to and choose the Edit button.
Now mark the box that says Full Control and select OK.
Now go to the start menu and type cmd in the search box, then hit enter.

 The cmd window will open.
Type net user and then hit enter.  This will show you all account names.  Then type net user followed by your account user name.  Fox example: net user editor  Then hit enter to see if your account is active.
If this doesn’t help, it may be time to reset your computer to factory settings. Consult the documentation that came with your computer to see how to accomplish that. Make sure you have all of your important data backed up before undertaking this process.

Solve The Windows Installer Problem

If you’ve ever seen this error in Windows when you’re trying to install a program, you know how frustrating it can be.
installer1
If this has ever happened to you, then you know how frustrating it can be. The error message seems to indicate that you need some type of professional computer technician to provide further assistance. This is simply not necessary.
There can be an easy way to fix this problem!
Follow these step-by-step instructions to fix the windows installer error in XP, Vista, and 7.
1 – In XP, the very first thing you’ll want to do is open up your start menu, located at the bottom left corner of your screen
installerstartmenu
2 – Click on the Run button. This will bring up a new window at the bottom left corner of your screen that looks like this:
installerstartmenu3
If you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can open up the run window from the task manager, click New Task at the bottom right of Task Manager.
newtask4
3 – Type in services.msc in the white line area of the run window, then click OK or hit Enter on your keyboard.
newtask
This will bring up a new window that looks like this:
installerwindow4
4 – We’re almost done! All you need to do is scroll down the list in this window until you see Windows Installer, as highlighted in the above image. Select this line and it will turn blue. Then right click and select Properties, as highlighted above. This will open up the last window in this process, as shown below. You may see that the Startup type is set to Disabled.
disabledinstaller
Click the drop-down menu for Startup type and choose Automatic. Then click OK at the bottom of that properties window. You can also now close out the services window that you opened up earlier in the process, as you are now done!

Alternatives To Ad Blocking

Its annoying to get bombarded with ads when you visit a website. While some do go overboard with banners, side bar ads, pop overs and random ads throughout the page, most legitimate websites only have a small amount. These ads are necessary to help pay for web hosting, site upgrades and of course, the site content you love. You might want to block all the ads for a cleaner and safer viewing experience, but if everyone blocks the ads, the site loses all its revenue.
Luckily, there are solutions to keep you safer without having to resort to full ad blocking solutions such as Adblock. These solutions give you more control over what you do and don’t block so you get a better browsing experience and the site still earns revenue.
My recommendation is if a site is too cluttered with ads or you get a malware/virus warning from your browser or anti-virus software, let the site owner know. If it’s a virus warning, it’s probably best to just leave the site and try again in a few days.
Use Disconnect For Privacy
Disconnect
If privacy and not the ads themselves are the problem, try the Disconnect plugin. It blocks trackers from analytics, advertising, social and content. Not only does this help speed up page loading times, but it still allows all social media buttons and ads to load. They just won’t be able to track your behavior. Site owners might not like being able to gather information about you, but they’ll still earn from their ads. You can whitelist sites or allow specific trackers.
Change Adblock Settings
Adblock is used by millions, but that doesn’t mean those millions of people are blocking every ad on every site. If you change the default settings, you can choose which sites you block ads on and what types of ads you block. Click the Adblock icon in your browser and choose Options.
Adblock Settings

First, ensure the Allow some non-intrustive advertising box is checked. This automatically allows simple ads. Many ads are still blocked, but the less intrusive ones are allowed.
Non-instrusive Ads

My approach to ad blocking with this plugin is to whitelist a site when I first visit. If the site’s advertising is reasonable, I leave it on the whitelist. If the ads are everywhere and preventing me from being able to use the site or the ads are affecting the performance of my browser, I remove the site from the whitelist. This way, every site has a chance.
Add or remove a site from the whitelist by clicking the Adblock (ABP) icon and clicking either Enabled on this site or Disabled on this site. If you see enabled, this means ads are blocked. If you see disabled, this means the site is whitelisted and ads are allowed.
Whitelist Sites
Block Javascript
Security issues have been a problem for years with Javascript. Since some ads use Javascript, you can protect yourself from potentially malicious ads by using a script blocking plugin or disabling Javascript within your browser’s settings. NoScript is one the top rated for Firefox. QuickJava is another Firefox solution for blocking scripts and Flash.
For Chrome, go to Settings, Show Advanced Settings, select Content Settings under Privacy and select Do not allow any site to run Javascript under Javascript. If you want more control over Flash, select Let me choose when to run plugin content under Plugins.
Chrome Settings

Use Ghostery
Ghostery is another plugin that protects your privacy without killing ads. It also works well for blocking scripts, so you don’t have to worry about blocking Javascript manually. It’s designed to block thousands of trackers and you can easily see what’s blocked and even allow certain trackers if you want.
While it might seem easier to just block everything, websites need your support in order to stay online. The only other option is for every website to become a membership only site. If you enjoy a site’s free content, support the site by allowing ads. Remember, you can always block trackers and more obtrusive ads versus blocking everything.

Help to Access Windows 10 App Store

Here’s how to add an account in Windows 10. Open your Start Menu and click on Settings.
Windows-10-settings-start-menu
Then choose Accounts:
windows-10-settings-account
Choose Family & other users.
windows-10-family-other-users
Choose Add a family member.
windows-10-family-add-user
Pick Add an adult. You can use an alternate e-mail address for this now instead of your Microsoft account.
windows-10-family-add-adult
Windows will walk you through the setup, just make sure you don’t restrict the account or you won’t be able to download apps and install them. Once the account is finished, just log on to your PC and go to the Windows store and test it out.
You will probably be able to download and install apps.

Open .ART Files

The .art extension was used by several art programs and also by AOL for images. It can be tricky to open these days. Probably the quickest thing to try is downloading AOL’s desktop software. It’s free at this link: http://discover.aol.com/products-and-services/aol-desktop-for-windows
From what I can tell, it will still open .art files. I can’t test it out myself, since I don’t have any .art files. Once AOL Desktop has installed, click “File” in the upper right corner and choose “Open” from the drop-down menu.
aol-open
You should be able to select your files to open.
aol-open-photo
You can then view the image in a photo viewer.
aol-open-photo-viewer
You may be able to click “Save” and save it as the more popular .jpeg file extension.
aol-open-photo-viewer-save
If not, you could try making the photo full-screen and the grabbing a screen shot to edit in a program like paint and eventually save as a .jpeg.

I hope this works for you!

Best ISPs For Gamers

If you’re a serious gamer, particularly a gamer that plays Internet-intensive games in categories like massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPGs), you should be aware that some Internet service providers (ISPs) are better for your gaming action than others.
World-of-warcraft
Speed Isn’t Everything
When looking at ISPs, many people consider speed to be the primary factor delivering a quality experience, but when it comes to games, speed is not the most important quality for an ISP to have. Instead, the quality of the connection rather than the quantity of the data being served is the most important consideration when choosing an ISP.

laptopcropped
As long as your download speed is over a few megabits per second (Mbps), the throughput of the connection shouldn’t be a factor when determining the quality of gameplay. Rather, what you should be looking for is something called “low latency” — a steady, consistent back-and-forth stream of data flowing between you and your ISP.

Test Your Latency
Speedtest.net developer Ookla is well-known for having one of the most widely-used apps, Speedtest, for testing speeds of an Internet connection from a desktop or mobile device. But Ookla also has another app, called Pingtest, available at pingtest.net, which measures two other elements of a connection: latency and jitter.
latency-test
In this context, latency is an average of the time it takes for a data packet to travel from your device to an ISP’s server and back. Jitter is a measure of the consistency of this latency over a number of different attempts to make the same measurement. Low jitter means high consistency and vice-versa. Ideally, for gaming, you want both latency and jitter to be as low as possible.
The Best ISPs for Gaming
In national tests run by PC Magazine, the best U.S. ISPs for gaming were ranked in this order:

  1. Verizon FIOS
  2. Optimum Online
  3. Midcontinent
  4. MetroCast
  5. Optimum WiFi
  6. Comcast
  7. Hotwire
  8. RCN
  9. Suddenlink
  10. Charter

Unmetered Game Downloads
In addition to low latency, many gamers are downloading their games rather than buying physical copies of them. Often, this can mean huge download sizes in terms of gigabytes (GBs), and in many cases, ISPs may limit how many gigabytes you’re allocated for downloading in a month. Be sure to look at all of an ISPs monthly packages to see which package is best for you. There are some ISPs that make exceptions, called unmetered data, for game downloads. Check with your ISP to see if they offer this.

Insert Dates Automatically In Documents

Luckily, there is an easy way to insert a field into your Word document that will give you an automatic date update every time that you open the document. First, of course, open your document. Next, click in your document where you’d like the date. Then click the INSERT tab on your tools ribbon.
1
Find DATE AND TIME and click it.
2
This opens the date and time dialog box. On the left, click the format in which you want the date. Once you’ve selected this, click the UPDATE AUTOMATICALLY tic box.
3
Click OK, and once you save your document, you’ll have a date there that updates every time you open the document.
As a bonus, here’s how to do the same thing in an Excel spreadsheet.
Open your spreadsheet, choose the cell where you want the date and enter the formula =TODAY(). This will give you a cell with the current date that updates every time you open the spreadheet!
I hope that this helps.

Windows 10: How Do I Drag Files To Folders?

You can move files into a folder without it being open. I opened a flash drive and my pictures folder with two test folders in two separate windows in Windows Explorer and was able to drag images from the flash drive to the folder.
drag-files
The problem here is that once I drop the file, the folder opens to show the contents. So I’d need to open up multiple instances of File Explorer. One for the flash drive and one for each folder I want to drop to. The solution is a simple one. Instead of dragging the images into the folders contained in various windows I’ve opened in File Explorer, I can open the flash drive in file explorer and then drop the images using the file tree on the left side. Since the files I want are under Pictures, I click the chevron next to Pictures.
picture-arrow-click
Then I can see all of the file folders.
file-tree-pictues
Then I can select the images I want on the right and drag them into the desired folders without having to continually open folders.
drag-to-folders
Hope that helps.

What Is rundll32.exe?

1
The DLL stands for DYNAMIC LINK LIBRARY, and it is actually a necessary part of Window’s functioning. The usual path for these is c:\windows\system32, although they may also show up under your username, like in my example here.
The fact that they are ordinarily a normal part of Window’s functionality doesn’t mean that they are not a threat. Sometimes hackers can insert fake rundll files in your system to facilitate their hack. One way to determine what the file is used for is to go to VIEW in your toolbar, and then click SELECT COLUMNS.
3
On the next screen, click COMMAND LINES. This will show the full path of the DLL file that you’re looking at. If you hover over this or right-click and click PROPERTIES, it will show you exactly which program is using the file. In this case, it is Nvidia, a driver for your video card.
4
If you don’t recognize the program, you may want to communicate with your friendly neighborhood computer geek to find out what the program is and if it’s harmful.
For the most part, though, DLL files are nothing to worry about and allow your machine to function properly.

Facebook Universal Search: Privacy Problem?

There’s a new way to search in Facebook, called Universal Search. What that means is that you are no longer limited to searching for just people, pages and groups in the Facebook search. If you type a topic into the box, you’ll also see recent posts from friends and public posts in the results. For the most part public posts are those made by pages set up for public figures and businesses.
facebook-universal-search
The default mode for Facebook posts in friends only, but some people choose to make public posts. Either they don’t care if the world sees their posts or they choose that option for a specific post. A reason you might choose to make a post public could be that you have a missing pet, and you want as many people as possible to be able to see it. Perhaps your child left a toy on a plane, and you’d like the widest possible audience to attempt to retrieve it.
You’ll see a lot of panicked news stories out there telling you to check your privacy settings. Here’s the deal: You should always be aware of your privacy settings. And everyone has always been able to see your public Facebook posts. That’s why you made it public, you wanted everyone to see it. Let’s take a look at how Universal Search works.
I put in the term Halloween and I see results for a trending news story on Halloween and photos about Halloween posted by my friends.
Universal-search-halloween
As I scroll down the results, I’ll see public posts about Halloween, like this one by Rolling Stone.
facebook-universal-search-halloween-post
Then I see posts by my friends.
facebook-universal-search-posts-friends
I can’t see posts by people who aren’t my friends unless those posts are public. Universal search does not change who is allowed to view your posts. It might be easier to find them, but public posts have always been public and anyone can see them. How do you know if a post is public? The default settings for posts is friends only. So unless you made some changes, only your friends can view your posts. But it doesn’t hurt to double-check your privacy settings.
Here’s a quick way to tell if your post is public. You’ll see little icon on the post with an arrow next to it. If the icon looks like a couple of people, that means you have it set to only share with friends.
faceboook-post-privacy-friends
Let’s click the drop-down menu and check out the other options. The little globe icon would indicate that it was a public post. You can easily change that by choosing one of the other options. You can choose the lock icon to make a post only visible to you or the gear icon to customize the settings and make it visible only to certain friends.
facebook-posts-public
Universal Search looks like it could be a great tool for searching and it won’t affect your current privacy settings. If you haven’t checked them lately, you really should.

MIcrosoft's First Laptop

Microsoft has stepped up its game when it comes to manufacturing devices with the new Surface Book convertible laptop, the company’s first laptop. This laptop-tablet combo is larger than previous versions of the Surface line with a 13.5 inch display and a full-sized backlit keyboard.
SurfaceBook
The keyboard attaches with what Microsoft calls Muscle Wire and stays securely attached, but you can instantly detach it by pressing a button.
SurfaceBook-keyboard
You can use it as a laptop, detach it to use as a large tablet or fold back the keyboard to use the pen-first mode.
SurfaceBook-convert
The display features a 3000 x 2000 (267 PPI) resolution. The Surface Book is capable of running demanding desktop apps and comes with a 6th generation Intel Core i5 or i& processor.
SurfaceBook-flat
At nearly 3.5 pounds (including the keyboard) this seems hefty in comparison to lighter Surface models, but for a workhorse PC, the metal laptop is fairly light. The laptop even features a dedicated graphics card for graphics intensive programs like video editors. Interestingly enough, that extra graphics chip lives in the keyboard, so when you disconnect to use it as a tablet, you lose some of the intensive processing capabilities. Though the tablet should work fine for gaming or watching movie. This chip is meant for work.
It’s available with 128 GB, 256 GB or 1 TB of internal storage for the solid state drive. It also features two full-sized USB ports and a card reader. The front facing camera is 5 MP and the rear facing 8 MP camera features auto focus.
Unlike previous Surface models, this comes with everything. The PC, keyboard and Surface Pen are included in the box. With the additional purchase of a Surface Dock you can connect it to monitors in a workstation setup.
It doesn’t come cheap. The starting price for the Surface Book is $1499. But if my experience with my Surface Pro is any indication, Microsoft’s hardware is worth it. The Surface Book is available for pre-order now from Microsoft.

How Big Is My Inbox?

The app won’t download everything in your Outlook.com inbox to your phone. Because you use an IMAP connection with an app, you can access your e-mails without downloading the entire contents of your Outlook.com inbox onto your phone. When you set up your account on your mobile device, you’ll choose whether you only want to see messages from the past week, month etc… on that device. (don’t worry, you can still access older messages if you need to see them.)
email-app-sync-option
Just to experiment, I added my Outlook.com  account to my Android e-mail app and despite the thousands of messages in my inbox, far less than a MB of data was added to the space the app takes up.
Now, if you are downloading a lot of attachments from e-mails, such as photos as documents, those can take up some space on your mobile device.
inboxselectmessage
If, instead of just instant access to your messages, you want copies of all those messages to store – a mobile device is not the answer.  A PC would be better suited for that task. Find an e-mail client that will let you use a POP3 account and download copies of those messages to your PC.  The amount of space taken up by an average text e-mail is about 10 to 30 KB.  When you add attachments they’ll get larger – maybe even as large as 500 KB. So consider the number of messages you have and the type of messages you have and just multiply it out to take a guess at how much space they would use.
I don’t know of a way to determine exactly how much space your Outlook.com messages take up. But that’s normally not an issue, because there really aren’t any limitations on how many messages you can have.

Can I Use Apps In Windows?

App is short for application and an application is the same thing as a program. The apps that run on Android phones and iPhones are usually smaller in size and lighter in function that desktop apps designed for the PC or Mac.
Android, iPhones and Windows PC each uses a different operating system. An app for Android won’t run on your PC and a program designed for your PC won’t run on your iPhone.
But often times, developers make versions of apps for multiple operating systems. If you like an app, there’s a possibility you can find it in the app Store for Windows 8.1 or Windows 10. (There’s no app store for Windows 7.)
To access the app store on you PC, look for the little store icon. It looks like a shopping bag.
windowsstoretile
In Windows 10, you’ll find it on your taskbar.
windows-store-logo
Once you open the Windows store, you can search for the app you want to find out if there’s a Windows version available.
4
I will caution you that the app selection of the Windows store does not match the millions of apps available in the Google Play Store (Android) or Apple (iPhone) App Store. But you’ll still find a lot of choices. In a Windows phone or tablet will also work on a PC or on a device like an Xbox One The display may be different, but the functionality is there.
